Markus LÜPERTZ (*born in 1941 in Liberec/ Czech Republic) is one of the best-known contemporary German artists and representatives of neo-expressionism. Along with Georg Baselitz, A.R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Jörg Immendorff, he joined the ranks of top German post-war artists on the national and international art scene. He is described by the media as the “Painter Prince”. Born in 1941 in Bohemian Reichenberg, Markus Lüpertz looks back on an established portfolio of work spanning decades. His art is characterised by major projects locally and abroad, along with close contact with influential public personas. He was head of the Düsseldorf Art Academy for 20 years. His subjects range from confronting German history to Greek mythology. The artist’s works are found in private collections as well as national and international museums (including the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in Paris, the National Gallery in Berlin, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels). MARKUS LÜPERTZ Bronze sculptures MARKUS LÜPERTZ Flora sculpture 2019 | Bronze sculpture, handpainted| Signature ML| 100 x 37 x 35 cm | Edition 6CHF 70,000 CHF 65,000 In Roman mythology, Flora is a goddess of flowers and associated with the season of spring. In ancient depictions, Flora is a young woman adorned with flowers and blossom. According to legend, Flora was brought to Rome by Sabine king Titus Tatius (who ruled Rome together with Romulus until his death), where he set up an altar for her. A goddess of vegetation and fertility, she was a goddess of flowers and plants – as the name suggests – as well as earth, grain and agriculture. She was also a goddess of youth and fertility. Similar to Bacchus, she is also a goddess of sensual pleasure and enjoyment, and is considered a patron goddess of prostitutes. MARKUS LÜPERTZ Hora sculpture 2016 | Bronze sculpture, handpainted| Signatur ML | 49 x 25 x 16,5 cm | Edition 45CHF 16,000 CHF 15,000 To mark the 70th anniversary of DIE ZEIT, Markus Lüpertz Hora Skulptur, 2016 was published by Kunstverlag Till Breckner in an edition of 45 copies. The figure “Hora” – Greek for “time” – reflects much more than a “time portrait”: it is a discussion of the fundamental meanings of the term. Thus, the hourglass at the feet of the “Markus Lüpertz Sculpture Hora” symbolises transience, while the pomegranate lying on it is the sign of fertility, continuation and immortality – a contradiction that is able to represent the extremes of time. Above it, the sculpture is figurative, but without a head – because time is superhuman. Other details convey Lüpertz’s message, which can also be found in many other works: the personification of a word in all its facets of meaning. The sculpture was published in an edition of 45 and is 49 cm tall. The artist painted each copy by hand. MARKUS LÜPERTZ Dyonisos sculpture 2020 | Bronze sculpture, handpainted| Signature ML| 55 x 19 x 17 cm | Edition 30CHF 16,000 CHF 15,000 Discover the 55 cm edition by Markus Lüpertz from 2020. The sculpture appears in a strictly limited edition of 30 copies. The artist derived the title from Greek mythology: Dionysos is the God of wine, grapes, fertility and ecstasy. Lüpertz’s interpretation resembles the ancient portrayals and sculptures in terms of form and comportment. The feet are positioned hip-width apart, the right arm is raised to shoulder height, holding out a sumptuous bunch of grapes towards the viewer. The left arm rests against the body at elbow height. In its hand, it holds a Kantharos – a drinking vessel for wine – slightly away from the body. Along with ivy vines and vine branches, these are the typical attributes of Dionysos.
